This documentary is about life of people from the village of Lukomir, the most isolated village in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an emphasis on the position of women and the male-female relationship in the specifically traditional context. Hard life and lack of perspective in this mediaeval village, possibly the only one of its kind in southern Europe, force young people to leave the village. This tendency brings into question the sole existance of Lukomir.

Author's view

Documentary films which talk about patriarchal traditions and their reflextions on the position of women, especially in small and rural communities, are an important instrument in the transformation of this phenomenon which maintains stereotypes in our society based on the gender discrimination. The story about Lukomir is a small contribution to that cause.

authors' CVs

Masa Hilcisin Dervisevic was born in 1978 in Sarajevo. She graduated World literature and European Studies and used to work as a journalist. She is currently engaged in Mediacentar Sarajevo as a coordinator on different kinds of media and journalist projects for Southeast Europe. She is very involved in the cultural life and scene, and has an extensive journalistic experience in this area. ‘Not If You Can, But You Must’ is her first documentary.

Cazim Dervisevic was born in Sarajevo in 1973. His career in media started in 1996. when he worked as a journalist. He started to learn about video production in the production house 012 where he produced several short movies and promo clips. In 2003 together with two friends established production house XY FILMS which focuses on documentary films and documentary TV program.
